Breaking Ground – A Contemporary Dance Festival in Phoenix

Tempe Center for the Arts is a well-known art center in Arizona. The center hosts many dance, musical and theoretical performances throughout the year. Tempe-based Architekton designed the theater, along with Barton Myers Associates.

Contemporary dance is part of the modern dance family and includes active leg and torso movements. The dance variety has borrowed the best of many dances, including ballet and butoh. Contemporary dance typically involves improvisation on the part of the dancer.

What can you expect from the event

CONDER/dance Company was started in 2003 and is focused on spreading cultural dance in Arizona. The company calls the Tempe Center for the Arts its home. Every year, the company produces the contemporary dance and film festival, known as Breaking Ground. The dance event happens for two days and is held at the Tempe Center for the Arts. The event has been produced by CONDER/dance since 2007.

The event usually comprises of two different nights of programming. The events of the first evening include pre-show programming and various local dances including “ten tiny dances”. There is also an after-party event on the second night. Some of the main stage artists include Lily Baldwin, Shaun Boyle, Selene Carter, Carley Conder, and Aaron McGlion.

CONDER helps in presenting quality contemporary dance work in its many forms. Phoenix New Times voted last year’s contemporary dance festival by CONDER as the best dance festival of 2014.

During the dance extravaganza, the company will also conduct classes on modern dance. The class rates are $10 for one class, $25 for three classes and $40 for five classes.

Tickets: The tickets prices are $20 in advance and $25 at door (general admission), and $15 for students and seniors.
