The Texas Dragon Boat Festival is an annual event hosted by Houston, Texas every year. Started in the year 2001, the Dragon Boat Race is a race down Buffalo Bayou and is a spectacular event visited by thousands of people from all over the country. This year the Texas Dragon Boat Festival will be held on 2nd May, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

What is Dragon Boat Racing?

Dragon Boat Racing is gaining the attention of water sports lovers all over the world. This water sport combines tradition and modernity and helps the contestants display their physical fitness, sportsmanship and team spirit.

The Texas Dragon Boat Racing provides traditional BUK Dragon Boats, constructed in traditional Hong Kong style. These boats measure 4 feet in width and are usually 40 feet long. A Dragon Boat can accommodate 1 steersperson, 1 drummer and 20 paddlers. The boat usually weighs 500 pounds.

The festival does not require the contestants to be skilled or have any experience. However, a practice session is given to the contestants one day prior to the race.

The Aim behind Dragon Boat Racing Festival

The main aim behind the organisation of the Texas Dragon Boat Racing is to put to test the physical fitness of the citizens of Texas, thus creating awareness about the importance of exercise and maintenance of physical fitness.

The Dragon Boat Race also aims at reviving and creating awareness about the majestic sport of Dragon Boat Racing, a traditional and dramatic aspect of Asian culture. The race tests the competitive skills of the contestants meanwhile enhancing qualities such as leadership and team spirit.

The Dragon Boat Racing Festival also creates awareness as well as funds for various charities across the country. The admission to spectators is free; however, the contestants are required to pay a nominal amount for registration.

Other Attractions of the Festival

The Texas Dragon Boat Racing Festival will host a variety of other entertainment options for the visitors as well as the contestants. With a new race beginning every 20 minutes, the spectators can feast on delicacies sold by vendors while witnessing the amazing races.

Since the admission is free, the spectators can enjoy the festival with their entire family while experiencing the charisma of live music and dance performance along with many cultural performances.

The festival also invites volunteers to help with organisation and other activities, including both in water and on land activities.

The Dragon Boat Racing Festival is a day filled with the exquisiteness of the Asian culture, zeal of sportsmanship and excitement of witnessing a unique combination of modernity and tradition.
